Big Red and I have found ourselves in some out of the way places recently. Moses
Lake and Longview, WA to name a few. Eating and drinking were not the main reasons for our visits, but we found a few notable establishments and had some memorable meals.
Moses Lake is home to Porterhouse Steakhouse, which offered up one of the best steak dinners I have ever had. The rib eye was cooked to perfection, the baked potato had a salt and pepper crust that was out of this world and the house red was delightful. It was from Dry Falls, a local winery, and was described as having flavors of “black currant, dried red cherry and a subtle hardwood finish”. Luckily I didn’t detect the hardwood bit or that might have been a turn off.
And if you find yourself in Longview (the closest town to Mount St. Helen) check out
Freddy’s Just For The Halibut. Here is my tip to you: don’t get fancy here. I made the mistake of ordering a glass of no name pinot grigio, grilled halibut and a baked potato. The wine was sweet and the fish and potato were dry…meh. Big Red kept it real with a glass of ice cold Alaska Amber, fried halibut and french fries. He scored and I learned a lesson.
You gotta love small town, locally owned restaurants! What are some of your favorites in out of the way towns?
