Okay, people. I know you are gearing up for trick or treaters, but do take time to ponder what’s in it for you this Halloween. Thematic wines, that’s what. Who doesn’t like scary labels, ghoulish names and blood red wine? I can’t get enough, so I have compiled a list of suggestions to compliment your Halloween activities:
- Owen Rose Sinister Hand: A red blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault. I am a big fan of this wine (note that I am a member of the Developed Tribe) and at $24 it is not too scary to your pocketbook.
- Charles Smith’s The Velvet Devil Merlot: You might recall that we recently tasted this one and it was not well liked. However it has a cool label and it is inexpensive ($10.99). Meaning: a good party wine if your friends are arty types who will remember the label and not the taste.
- Casillera del Diablo (aka: The Devil in the Cellar). This is a line of great, affordable Chilean wines with a variety of reds and whites. Check out this video for the legend of the devil.
- The Ghost of 413 by Giant Wine Company in Woodinville, WA. I have not tried this one but the online tasting notes describe it as “dark, spicy and generous with tastes of black cherry and milk chocolate.” Sounds good to me, and perhaps the “generous” bit will motivate you to hand out more candy to those poor trick or treaters. Retail is about $15 a bottle.
- Bogle Vineyards Phantom: This red is a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Syrah and Mourvedre, retailing for about $16 a bottle. I haven’t tried it yet but am a fan of the label.
I would love to hear your recommendations for Halloween sipping. Please send in your faves and in the meantime, Happy Halloween!
