I recently hosted a baby shower for my friend Aimee. There were 12 women attending
and the focus was on chatting (i.e. no baby shower games). Not knowing how many of my guests drank—or how much—I wanted to be prepared, so I bought two bottles each of Champagne, Rosé, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. Should do the trick . . . right?
Wrong.
What I didn’t take into account was the celebratory nature of the gathering. Everyone wanted bubbles and lots of them. I have never heard so many people declare, “Oh! I never drink champagne,” and then down so much of it. When the Champagne was gone, I figured the next best thing was something pink so we drained the Rose. I was left with a the Pinot Grigio and a Pinot Noir that smelled a whole lot like sweet pickle relish. (I’ll save that for another post.)
So here are my takeaways . . .
1. When hosting a celebratory gathering don’t worry so much about having a wine to please every palate. Instead, have a lot of bubbly on hand.
2. Everyone should be drinking more bubbly. We all have something to celebrate daily—even if it is just making it through another Monday— so don’t let another moment go by without toasting it. If a pricey Champagne feels too over the top for an everyday celebration, try Prosecco or Cava instead.
Cheers!
